In 2015, the City of Coronado will celebrate 125 years since its incorporation on December 11, 1890. Since lists of traditional anniversary gifts tend not to go that high, Coronado will be giving itself the gift of a year-long celebration of the Crown City’s history, its accomplishments, its citizens, and its future. Designated “Coronado Celebrates 125,” the City, working through its Cultural Arts Commission, will collaborate with a wide variety of individuals, businesses, and organizations to engage citizens and visitors alike in an extraordinary celebration. In order to kick things off, the Mayor Casey Tanaka invites you to a Citywide Planning Meeting on Monday, November 17 at 4 p.m. in the Community Center’s Nautilus Room. Please bring your energy and your ideas to the first step on a path towards a jubilant year ahead.
The City Council has tasked the Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) to work in concert with the community to plan this year long celebration. The Commission will collaborate with the various segments of the communityincluding schools, businesses, churches, the military, city departments, boards, commissions, as well as neighborhoodsto generate ideas and coordinate with other organizations. From the familiarity of its iconic landmarks to the gravitas of its military history to the resplendency of its beaches, Coronado is a destination of many interests. Thus the 125th celebration will include events, experiences, and activities that represent the community in its entirety and engage the spectrum of its residents and visitors to mark this momentous year.
The official festivities will begin with a Mayor’s Proclamation in early December declaring a year of celebration beginning December 11, 2014, and ending December 11, 2015 with a festive “Mayors’ Ball.” Community-sponsored events will take place throughout the year in addition to CAC’s organization and production of a series of large scale City events offering sponsorship opportunities for businesses (for more information on Sponsorship opportunities, please contact Heidi Wilson).
In part, “Coronado Celebrates 125” will be modeled off of CAC’s role in this past summer’s successful Oz Con, when the community celebrated its unique connection to L. Frank Baum and all things Oz. The CAC will again coordinate with participating organizations so that the timing and theme of their event(s) are unique in that each group gets a moment in the spotlight. Additionally, the CAC will work with individuals and neighborhood groups and a host of volunteers to offer additional events and activities throughout Coronado.
The Mayor and CAC look forward to seeing you on the 17th. Bring your ideas for a celebratory 125th Anniversary and sign-up as a volunteer to make 2015 a year like no other.
